Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “Philanthropy is commendable, but it must not cause the philanthropist to overlook the circumstances of economic injustice that make philanthropy necessary.”  

Don’t get me wrong.  There’s so much to admire and value in philanthropy.
But privilege and power too often dominate.  And I see that as a moral dilemma.

Traditional philanthropy dominates the sector, often reinforces the status quo, and may limit change. The sector’s writing, professional associations, and conferences do not give equal voice or recognition to social change philanthropy.

I first started writing about this in 2005. No surprise – pretty much nothing has changed.  So let’s talk.

But be prepared.  Some remarks may make you uncomfortable.
