We can talk about harsh subjects. And, doing so, we can make them better. 2018 has been the year of the #MeToo movement. Women are feeling safer telling their stories of sexual harassment, abuse, misconduct and assault. Unfortunately, the social sector is not free of these stories.
In the last six months alone, revelations of misconduct and abuse have been shared about many organizations you and I hold dear – from local children’s charity fundraisers here in Canada, to abuse of vulnerable populations by staff of some of our planet’s leading international aid agencies, to resignations of the leaders of huge non profit organizations in the US.  Recently the AFP has launched a study revealing that ¼ female fundraisers have experienced sexual harassment in their fundraising careers.
We now know that our sector is not safe from abuse and sexism.  And we know that the time for this truly is up.  Because it’s the right thing to do – and because our organizations exist solely because of the trust the public has in us.
So we want to start this conversation.  We pose you the questions: does sexism exist in the non-profit sector?  In your organization?  Are you prepared for your own charity’s #MeToo moment?  And what can we do to weed sexism out for good?
