Building a Successful Digital Fundraising Program | MasterClass part 1
Limited Capacity seats available

Digital fundraising is the fastest growing area of our sector. But many organisations and fundraisers are struggling to reach their full digital fundraising potential. Even more struggle just to get started.

Jon R. Lloyd has built some of the most successful digital programs on the planet for organisations like SumOfUs and the Mozilla Foundation. He’s here to help! This full-day MasterClass will take you through the process of building a Digital Fundraising Program based on best practices and prepare you for success.

You’ll start the day with Jon guiding you to create a strategy for your Digital Fundraising Program. In the afternoon, you’ll focus on tactics and practical application of your strategy so you can get the results you need to fuel your organisation’s mission.

This intense day will be filled with hands-on learning exercises to give you a chance to apply the instructional part of the MasterClass, even before you head back to the office! You’ll leave the day equipped to improve (or launch) your Digital Fundraising Program and ready to bask in admiration from your boss, your board and your donors.

Join Simone and Tom.  Plan extraordinary experiences – and engage your boss, board members, and program staff to help.

What kind of fundraiser do you want to be? Good. Bad. Or Great.
Limited Capacity seats available

See that fundraiser over there? Her event prowess is amazing.  But she can’t figure out how to get board members involved.  Actually, she doesn’t know much about governance.

See that fundraiser outside the door.  She raises big bucks.  And she’s very happy in her silo in the building next door.

Direct mail. Grantwriting.  Fundraising events.  Peer-to-peer activities.  Major gifts solicitation.  All those tactics, techniques, and tools.  Solid fundraising.

But surely that isn’t all that the great fundraisers know and do.  What about leadership and questioning the status quo?  How about serving as a change agent and fostering the best corporate culture?  And so much more.

That’s what makes great.  I want great.  How about you?

B1-1: Writing a Powerful Case for Support
Limited Capacity seats available

"Why should I give you my hard-earned money?"

Answer this question well, and you'll never be short of funds. Answer it poorly,
and fundraising becomes an uphill battle.

Most nonprofits suffer from what the best-selling business book, Made to Stick,
rightly calls the "curse of knowledge."  This shortcoming - and a common lack of donor-centricity - seriously undermine the effectiveness of many (maybe even most) donor communications ... from the humble elevator speech (an overrated exercise) to direct mail appeals to websites to stewardship materials like "gratitude reports" all the way up to capital campaign case statements.

In this revealing session, one of North America's most experienced case writers shares his secrets for properly selling your projects, programs, endowments, initiatives, buildings, renovations, and bright ideas.

B1-4: How a chocolate chip cookie can change the world
Limited Capacity seats available

Families rely on the Ajax Pickering Hospital from birth to death and everywhere life takes them in between. And that means Ajax Pickering Hospital is exactly like community hospitals across the country.

BUT what makes the APH Foundation special is the deep, deep investment they’ve made in building relationships with their frontline staff.

This allows them to tell incredible and credible stories from the frontlines of local, community healthcare that inspires donors to support the caring women and men who are standing by 24/7; ready to help whenever one of their neighbours is in need.

Jennifer will explain how they build and benefit from these relationships and use them to drive their fundraising narrative.

From solicitations to stewardship…

From Direct Mail to Major Capital Campaigns…

From scrubbing into surgery to sitting in the medical office of one of North America’s top Orthopedic specialists ensuring he completes handwritten Christmas appeal follow-up cards…

Jennifer will show you how you can build relationships with your frontline/program m staff and inspire your donors with their spirit and their stories.

Whether you work in a hospital, an inner-city mission, an animal rescue, an educational institution or an environmental NGO, you’ll be able to apply the lessons from this community hospital foundation working on the eastern suburban fringe of Toronto.

B2-1 Subversive Acts by Everyday People -- social justice and progressive philanthropy
Limited Capacity seats available

Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “Philanthropy is commendable, but it must not cause the philanthropist to overlook the circumstances of economic injustice that make philanthropy necessary.”

Don’t get me wrong.  There’s so much to admire and value in philanthropy.
But privilege and power too often dominate.  And I see that as a moral dilemma.

Traditional philanthropy dominates the sector, often reinforces the status quo, and may limit change. The sector’s writing, professional associations, and conferences do not give equal voice or recognition to social change philanthropy.

I first started writing about this in 2005. No surprise – pretty much nothing has changed.  So let’s talk.

But be prepared.  Some remarks may make you uncomfortable.

Just like Carl on The Walking Dead did his best to create a better world with what he left behind, your ordinary donors want to do the same.  The benefit of not being in the throes of a zombie apocalypse is your average donor has significant assets and a propensity to give to your charity.  With the right approach, they will arrange a very meaningful gift for your organisation.  Just like Carl carefully prepared his wishes for a better world and shared them with all the important people in his life, your donors are willing to do the same.  All you need is the right approach and some tools to build the relationship.

Come to this session to learn how you can help your ordinary donors achieve extraordinary philanthropic dreams with an effective legacy marketing program.

B3-2: Fundraising’s Digital Transformation: a session for Leaders and Agitators
Limited Capacity seats available

Organizational digital transformation is no longer that curious thing that some outlier organizations do: it's becoming necessary to thrive in this environment of new competition, channels, opportunities and expectations.

You know some of the companies and nonprofits that seem to get 'it': do you ever wonder how they got there?  Digital transformation is a journey and it doesn't happen organically.  We're going to share with you what digital transformation actually looks like, and what the journey entails.  So even if your organization isn't ready yet, you'll know when you will be.

We'll start by discussing two things you'll need for the journey: clarity in where your org is vs. where you want to go and understanding your risks vs. your opportunities.  Then we'll map out the defining characteristics of successful and impactful organizations: bold leadership, curiosity/culture shift, responsiveness, openness, and distributed functioning.

This is the conversation about digital as a strategy - and digital at a leadership level - you've been waiting to have.  Oh, and you don't even need to be digitally sophisticated to participate.  But you do need to be curious about digital transformation or be a decision maker or leader of an organization.

We're not talking about which technology is the best, or the most popular social media platforms of the year.  Those conversations should only happen after your organization understands how digital fits into everything. We're talking about digital transformation.

You'll learn:
  • How a digitally transformed organization naturally puts its constituents' first.
  • Why it's better to start where you are, rather than wait for a magical, perfect time.
  • Why curiosity and culture play such surprising and big roles.
  • How equity, diversity and inclusion can be easily prioritized within the new dynamic.
  • Why it's not about hiring 'digital people'.
  • Why it's not about process and is about empowering your team.

The challenge of leadership touches us all - no matter what position we hold.

Being a good leader is a timeless pursuit. The requirements of leadership, however, evolve as the world grows more complex. Today’s fundraising leaders must not only manage (often limited) resources and achieve ambitious results; they must also involve others in the process of change and continuous improvement.

This session will provide an introduction to some of the essential tools of leadership, including strategy, planning, change management, collaboration and team development.

B3-4: Build it and they will come: Acquiring new donors with giant blanket forts
Limited Capacity seats available

Canuck Place Children's Hospice faces a particular challenge--the topic of terminally ill children tends to shut down conversations. This makes finding and acquiring new donors difficult.

In an effort to tell a different story about Canuck Place, we launched the Best Day Ever campaign. At the centre of this campaign was a giant blanket fort that we built in downtown Vancouver. We invited the public and media, shared stories from inside the hospice and encouraged visitors to give toward Canuck Place kids' best days ever.

This case study will explore how we developed this integrated campaign, the challenges we faced and the results of the month-long communications and fundraising campaign.

Attendees will leave with new, creative ways to develop their own original campaigns and with best practices around launching and optimizing an online/offline campaign with many moving parts.

B4-3: Best Practices for Digital Fundraising
Limited Capacity seats available

Best practices for digital fundraising are a funny thing to define.

Digital is relatively new and changing all the time – even just defining ‘digital’ is changing. Because of that, best practices for online fundraising aren’t prescriptive.

Join this session for Jon's no-bullshit list of best practices for digital fundraising that (shouldn’t) rapidly go out of date.

You'll learn:

1. All about the importance of testing
2. How to go to where your audience is
3. What's good content and how to use it
4. Why the personal touch matters

B4-4: Guerilla Donor Relations
Limited Capacity seats available

Want to build more authentic relationships with your donors? Wondering what the heck ‘relationship building’ even means? If so this interactive presentation is for you.

For years, Mary Saretski has been working hard to build strong, trust-based relationships with donors through ‘guerilla fundraising’.

Mary will share her most successful ideas in this session that will be half presentation and half group discussion.  Registered participants will receive these ahead of the session to get a sense of the types of tactics employed and are invited to bring your own gems and/or areas you are stuck on for a rollicking group discussion.

We will focus on simple ideas that anyone -- from a one-person shop to a large institution -- can implement immediately to engage donors in an authentic relationship with your cause and raise more money.
